Auckland Heirloom Seed Savers Network Autumn Meeting

We look forward to welcoming everyone to the Autumn Seed Swap. As usual it will be held in the Auckland Botanical Gardens but this year it will be held in the Friends building instead of in the classroom. Look for the building that stands by itself on your left between the Auckland garden which borders Hill Road, and the road that runs through the car park. Bring plants and cuttings to share, seed for the Seed Bank and a plate of food for a shared lunch at midday.

Auckland Heirloom Seed Savers Trip to Unitech Organic Gardens

Unitech has organic gardens, a vertical composting unit, a water treatment garden, as well as a large number of unusual and interesting trees. A large part of their grounds used to be part of the Carrington Hospital, which was planted up with a large number of trees. Many are now very impressive specimens and the grounds are often visited by various groups to see the trees.

If anyone still has energy afterwards, we may go for a walk along the Oakley Creek walkway.

The Autumn meeting (ASE's first ever) was a great success with seed savers from all backgrounds attending and large amounts of seeds and other produce swapped.

The spring meeting will be a great opportunity to obtain new varieties for the coming season. Bring along your excess seeds, tubers and plants for the seed swap table. A guest speaker (TBA) will talk on a topic related to seed saving. We hope to have staff from Koanga Gardens attending who will offer advice and sell books on seed saving. Harvest Festival Seed Saving Hui

This is a great opportunity for all of you interested in seed saving from all around New Zealand or those of you who are seed multipliers or growing open pollinated seeds on a commercial basis to support each other to do a better job of saving our seeds.

The Hui is being held in conjunction with the Koanga Gardens' Annual Harvest Festival. Full details of the harvest festival are available on the Koanga Gardens web site. After the Harvest Festival closes at 4:00pm on Saturday we offer an evening session of food, music, and discussion around aspects of gardening and seed saving. A forum for questions and answers. Everyone is welcome but numbers will be limited to 30 as that is all we can comfortably fit in the Whare for the evening session. We'll provide a beautiful organic evening meal and facilitate the evening.

Seed Savers Forum

From discussions at the Soil & Health Conference in Auckland, the Seed Savers Forum in Golden Bay and including consultation with bio-regional seed saver groups, interested individuals, groups and seed companies who were unable to attend these two events, there is strong support for the strengthening of links between seed savers nationally and for the development of a national 'Seed Register'.

Discussions are now focused on how to achieve this and a proposed strategy has been developed, which we now offer for consideration and initial feedback to all those interested. This forum will develop this initiative further. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Seed Savers Forum

The forum will create a national Seed Savers Network to connect home garden seed savers and small seed exchanges, so seeds can be distributed from resources big or small to where there is use or need.

We invite any seed savers or other interested people to help generate the structure of a National Seed Savers Network.
