Waimarama Seed Exchange

Waimarama Seed Exchange is based at the Nelson (Waimarama) Community Organic Gardens, Brook Street, Nelson. Seeds available through the exchange come from the Community Gardens' seed collection as well as the collections of several other local seed saving enthusiasts.

The Seed exchange and local network is being re-established after some time of dormancy. This was partly due to a fire that destroyed most of Waimarama's saved seeds two years ago (all the more reason to have many seed banks/exchanges, small and large around the country).

We have regular monthly meetings at different properties, sharing seeds, plants and expertise. Although there are only a few seed guardians, there are a number of people interested in seed saving. The Waimarama Gardens run courses on seed saving each autumn.

The Gardens are organically managed and are for the benefit and education of the community as well as being a resource for plants, seeds and diversity in wildlife. The greater the involvement and interest by the human community the greater is the richness in these Gardens. We are building communities of plants and creatures, micro-organisms and macro-organisms.
